Work and Life

There's a bunch of people who, hearing a complaint about any unfairness, just say, "work harder". Sounds reasonable, but it's difficult to really start working harder than you usually do. And those people who give out this suggestion wouldn't probably do it themselves.

One reason why they don't is that there should be a balance between work and rest/other life. You can only temporarily borrow time from resting, but it backfires shortly.

What really matters is a fixed process around your work. If nothing makes you wake up early and start doing stuff, you start wasting time. If nothing makes you leave your workplace before midnight, you're borrowing time from your rest.

Grad school is an assembly of folks who try (with varying degree of success) to set up and enforce a self-served process of doing things.
